July 2 - Looking Up! - Daisies seem to embrace the sun. -- Luke 12:27-28 “Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?”

Great Blue Heron

July 3 - Great Blue Heron - Standing perfectly still on the shoreline, this Great Blue Heron patiently awaits his next meal. Great blue herons are excellent fishermen. These birds can be spotted around shorelines and shallow marshes wading through the water. Once their next meal is spotted, they will stretch out their long neck and freeze in place. Then, when the moment is right, they strike with their knife-like bill. “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? Job 12:7-9

American Bald Eagle

July 4th - American Bald Eagle - A symbol of power and strength, it is no wonder the American Bald Eagle is America's national symbol. The bald eagle was chosen as a symbol for the United States because it is a majestic bird, it is a North American bird, and it freely soars the skies, which was an excellent symbol for the US as a new country. But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

Distant Horizon

July 5 - Distant Horizon - In mid-summer, the azimuth of the sunrise is once again moving south, and soon we will notice the shorter daylight hours. Looking up the North Shore of Lake Superior on a summer morning is always a refreshing sight and a reminder that time is moving on. Light passing through the dense, moist surface air leaves the stronger magenta wavelengths to shine through. For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord, my God, will enlighten my darkness. Psalm 18:28

Amity Creek

July 6 - Amity Creek - Mid-summer rainfall rushes down the Amity Creek on the far eastern side of Duluth. The stone bridge is one of the beautiful bridges built along Seven Bridges Road in 1900 and is part of Occidental Boulevard, extending to Skyline Parkway. Seven Bridges Road is one of the hidden gems found in Duluth. He sends forth springs in the valleys; They flow between the mountains; Psalm 104:10

Fireweed

July 7 - Fireweed - One of the last wildflowers of the season, fireweed blossoms along many roadsides in the Northland. The name 'fireweed' originates from this plant's fantastic ability to quickly grow back into areas burned by fire. In this photo, fireweed embraces the lichen-covered rocks along the shoreline of Lake Superior. Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Luke 12:27

Emerald Waters - Apostle Island Sea Caves

July 8 - Emerald Waters - The Apostle Islands sit just offshore from the Bayfield Peninsula on Lake Superior. Erosion of the sandstone has carved out sea caves that can be visited by boat during the summer and cross country skis during colder winters. The caves are one of the region's wonders and give new meaning to "Heaven on Earth." He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. Psalms 23:2

Sailboat Regatta

July 9 - Sails Up! - An evening watching sailboats skimming across the clear blue waters of Lake Superior is always a relaxing and enjoyable pastime. The Bible uses wind as to describe the way God works. We may not be able to see him, but there’s no denying it when we’re in the wake of what he’s doing. Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind . . . so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things. —Ecclesiastes 11:5

Storm Front Passing Over Duluth

July 10 - Storm Front Over Duluth - The average high temperature in July of 75F in Duluth provides plenty of fuel for thunderstorms. It is always an enjoyable venture to try your luck at capturing the lightning with your camera. The temperature of a lightning bolt can be 50,000 °F – much hotter than the sun's surface, which is only about 10,000. The heat causes the air around the bolt to quickly expand, breaking the sound barrier and sounding a clap of thunder as it does so. Behold, he scatters his lightning about him and covers the roots of the sea. Job 36:30

Duluth Rose Garden

July 11 - Duluth Rose Garden - This beautiful park graces the shores of Lake Superior in Duluth. A spectacular extension of Leif Erikson Park, Duluth's Rose Garden displays thousands of rose bushes and other floral delights. A walk through the Rose Garden in the dew of a cool July morning brings instant calm and a renewed spirit. A sweet scent drifts through the garden as the evening dew evaporates and brings the sweet aromas with it throughout the park. While this lvely scene is temporary, it is a good reminder that so are we! As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; Psalm 103:15

Lake Lightning

July 12 - Lake Lightning Lightning storms frequent the Northland in the warm July atmosphere and create stunning lighting displays. This storm took several hours to pass by and woke most residents with the light show and thunder. The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook. Psalms 77:18

Comet Neowise

July 13 - Comet Neowise - Streaking through the night sky, comet Neowise casts a reflection into a quiet lake in a 2 am fly-by earth. Comets are cosmic balls of ice gases, rock, and dust that orbit the Sun. Occasionally they are visible from eath. Neowise will return again in 6800 years! Every object in the night sky reveals the glory of God in absolute truth and clarity. By faith, we understand that the universe was created by the word of God so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. Hebrews 11:3

Duluth Rose Garden

July 14 - This beautiful park graces the shores of Lake Superior in Duluth. A spectacular extension of Leif Erikson Park, Duluth's Rose Garden offers a beautiful arrangement of more than 3,000 rose bushes and other floral delights. There's also a fountain, a marble gazebo, an herb garden and plenty of benches overlooking the lake.

Cry of the Loon

July 15 - Cry of the Loon - Summer melody of every northern lake. Researchers have identified four distinct calls used by loons: tremolo, wail, yodel, and hoot. These calls are used for various situations and echo across the open water. “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Tall Ship on Superior

July 16 - Tall Ship on Superior - The Tall Ship Niagara was sailing under full sail on Lake Superior. Just off-shore of Duluth's Canal Park, the Niagara attracted a lot of attention. A reminder of our nautical heritage, sailing ships were frequent visitors to the Port of Duluth-Superior Duluth in ages past. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. Isaiah 42:10

Pure Power

July 17 - Pure Power - Lightning is one of the powerful forces on earth, an incredible display of God's glory. This storm rolled across the Northland on a warm July night. The resident fireflies also added to the light show. It is He who made the earth by His power, Who established the world by His wisdom; And by His understanding, He has stretched out the heavens. When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, And He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain, And brings out the wind from His storehouses. Jeremiah 10:12-13

Gooseberry Roots

July 19th - Gooseberry Roots - With a backdrop of Gooseberry Falls, this cedar tree shows the incredible ability of God's creations to grow and thrive in harsh environments. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers. Psalm 1:3

Fishing Fleet Departs

July 20- The Fishing Fleet Departs - Charter fishing boats from Duluth fan out across Lake Superior on a warm mid-July morning. The big lake is abundant with lake trout, salmon, and whitefish that provide adventure and a meal for many. "The kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish." Matthew 13:47

Apostle Island Sea Caves

July 21 - Sea Caves - The sea caves located offshore from the Bayfield Peninsula in Wisconsin are an incredible sight to see and hear. Accessible by kayak, the richly colored sandstone cliffs display the ages of erosion by the waves of Lake Superior. The deep hollow eches of water sounding in the inner chambers create a symphony of sound like no other on earth. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains are carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and are troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. Psalm 46:1-3

Double Rainbow

July 22 - Rainbows over St. Louis River - Passing showers during July often produce amazing rainbows across the Northland. This double rainbow marched through the skies following a late afternoon thunderstorm. A double rainbow occurs when the light is reflected twice in a separate shower from two different directions. Notice that the second rainbow is slightly higher and fainter in color than the first rainbow and has its colors reversed. The rainbow has always been a sign of hope. So the next time you see a rainbow, remember that God placed it there for you to remember Him. When the rainbow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” Genesis 9:16

July 23 - Mid-Summer Sunrise - A colorful sunrise beams through the South Pier Lighthouse in Duluth.

Peaceful Morning Fishing

July 24 - Peaceful Morning Fishing - A lone fisherman casts into the waters of a lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The cool mist of morning rises peacefully from the lake to envelope the fisherman and surrounds him with calm serenity. God's creation settles our soul and reflects His Glory. Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all. 2 Thessalonians 3:16
