Common Loon
2004 was a cool springtime in the Northland with a return to normal rainfall. The trees began to bud about 2 weeks late and the loons also nested about 2 weeks later than normal. I watched this pair start their nest on May 10th, and the baby hatched on June 10th.
The baby loon in these pictures was 1 to 2 days old when the they showed up in front of my lake home to show off their new born.
