Crisp Point Lighthouse

May 18th - The Crisp Point Lighthouse has a fixed red Fourth Order lens located at a focal plane of 62 feet. The light was built in 1905.

Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse

The small wooden frame lighthouse on the southeast shore of Grand Island was constructed during the period 1869-1870 for the the purpose of guiding vessels into Munising Harbor from the east. The land was one of a number of parcels reserved in 1847 for government use.

Sand Hills Lighthouse

In 1910, the new 580' ore carrier William C. Moreland, completing her first season, became stranded on the shoals and broke in two. The William C. Moreland was valued at $400,000. This provided the impetus to build a new lighthouse. In 1917 a temporary light and fog signal were erected at 5 mile point while the present-day structure was being built. All materials for Sand Hills Lighthouse had to be brought to the site by barge, there were no roads. The huge Sand Hills Lighthouse was completed in 1919, with two full stories and a row of windows looking out from a small third level. The Light station was divided into two separate residences, with a square 91' light tower projecting from the middle of the building. The new lighthouse was the twin of the Scotch Cap Lighthouse on Alaska's Unimac Island.

The shipwreck of the John Jacob Astor in 1844 and rapidly expanding Lake Superior shipping traffic influenced lead to the construction of the Copper Harbor Lighthouse in 1847. For $4,800, Charles Rude built the original 65-foot-tall split stone, whitewashed tower on Hays Point between 1848-1849 about 100 feet in front of the present lighthouse in the vicinity of the steel tower.

Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse

The small wooden frame lighthouse on the southeast shore of Grand Island was constructed during the period 1869-1870 for the the purpose of guiding vessels into Munising Harbor from the east. The land was one of a number of parcels reserved in 1847 for government use. Resembling a small country church in style, its original color was white. The location, opposite the dangerous shoal at Sand Point, was critical for safe navigation. By 1905 however, the Lighthouse Board noted that the light was no longer serving its original purpose. Considering the difficulties in maintenance and the mariner's desire for improved range lights, its abandonment was only a matter of time. The light was finally abandoned in 1913 as a result of the construction in 1908 of improved range lights.

The Point Iroquois Light was first illuminated in 1857 and its Fourth Order Fresnel lens shone over one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world: the entrance to the St. Mary's River and the Soo Locks. Point Iroquois became busier with each passing year, and the personnel and facilities required to run the station grew accordingly. In 1870 the house and tower were completely rebuilt, and in 1902, a two-story rectangular brick house was added to the residence to provide housing for the assistant keeper at a total cost of $18,000.
