Loons in the Sunset
The loons returned to Caribou Lake on May 3rd, the day after the ice went out. On this particular May evening a pair of loons swam by, hollering and calling to others flying overhead on their way north. The overhead loons circled and landed for a short visit before continuing on their journey. This pair is here for the summer. They appeared content to patrol the lake together and they seemed to enjoy each others company, like best friends. Soon they will be nesting for a month, hopefully followed by a baby or two.

When the loons passed by my home, I slid my kayak into the water and followed them for a ways, enjoying the view and the play of light on the glassy surface of the lake.

The loons were a reminder that summer is fast approaching and the season of new life is upon us once again with flowers and leaves and babies of all kinds popping up and hatching all around us.

I sat for awhile and found myself gazing at the loons and the sunset while floating on the calm water and I knew that God had created this moment for me and you to remember the creator of all this beauty and to thank Him for all of the visible evidences of Him that surround us each day. It's a reminder to slow down and appreciate life, if only for a moment, and to realize that as surely as the seasons come and go, so does our short stay here on this beautiful earth. God's attributes are apparent in all of His creations, and he uses nature to show us more of who he is, day by day.

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;
for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23
